Back to Main Project GalleryThis is the first subsurface flow wetland project in Wisconsin. Planning started in 1995 and construction was completed in 1998. During the school year, a typical day has 150 children visiting. The weltand and waste water treatment have become part of the curriculum.
Located on over 400 acres of rural Wisconsin, the nature center is in the midst of prairie, wooded, and wetland habitat. A 2,000 gallon per day subsurface flow wetland was built to treat all domestic wastewater, including kitchen. Two subsurface flow wetland are in series with the dispersal component being a #1 stone trench flowing a ground contour upgradient of natural sedge meadow. Nitrogen removal has exceeded that of conventional mound and trench treatment system.
