Soil Gas Methane

a Municipality in the Fox Valley, Wisconsin Back to Main Project Gallery

The property where the Village’s municipal building and garage is located also contains three closed landfills.  In 2011, methane gas was detected in subsurface areas on the property.

Sand County Environmental conducted a site investigation to identify soil gas methane concentrations and instituted both passive and active remediation measures to address the issue.

Active remediation, rather than passive gas venting,  is faster in addressing soil gas methane, but has higher initial capital and operating costs.  Most of the impacted areas were able to be addressed using passive gas venting.

In 2018, development of adjacent property required a more aggressive remediation effort on the northwest portion of the Village property.  An additional active gas extraction system was installed and activated in 2019 and at first reduced and now controls soil gas methane in this area.
